Equinox and Soulcycle are facing backlash after the companies’ chairman and owner Stephen Ross planned to host a fundraiser for Donald Trump. According to ‘The Washington Post,’ the billionaire New York real estate developer is hosting a fundraiser luncheon for Trump on Friday at his Southampton home, where $100,000 buys you lunch and a photo op with Trump, $250,000 includes a roundtable discussion and a price tag of $5,600 to just get in. The news caused an outrage with the public with many, including a number of celebrities such as Chrissy Teigen and Billy Eichner calling for a boycott of the luxury gym and its associated fitness chains, SoulCycle and Blink Fitness. Eichner, who admitted to cancelling his membership tweeted, “Hey @Equinox – what’s your policy for canceling memberships once a member finds out your owner is enabling racism and mass murder?” Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness tweeted, “Cancelled that membership @Equinox & as if! I never paid those outrageous non discounted ass soul cycle prices.” Teigan also posted a series of tweets encouraging the boycott and tweeted, “everyone who cancels their equinox and soul cycle memberships, meet me at the library. bring weights” Ross, who also owns the Miami Dolphins, even received criticism from Dolphins wide receiver Kenny Stills, who re-tweeted the news with a picture of the billionaire’s nonprofit dedicated to equality in sports tweeting, “You can’t have a non profit with this mission statement then open your doors to Trump.” A spokesperson for both Equinox and SoulCycle released a statement to ‘THR’ saying neither company had anything to do with the Trump fundraiser and they did not support it saying, However, some including ‘New York Magazine’ and ‘HuffPost’ contributer Yashar Ali, were quick to point out that Ross is not a passive investor as he controls and owns a majority of Related Companies, which is the parent company of both Equinox and Soul Cycle, related companies.
