Fundraisers planned for artists who lost equipment in fire


PEOPLE IN THE ARTS COMMUNITY ARE WORKNG TO RAISE MONEY TO REPLACE EQUIPMENT DAMAGED IN A FIRE. A BUILDING IN THE 18-HUNDRED BLOCK OF SOUTH CALHOUN STREET WENT UP IN FLAMES EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING. NEWSCHANNEL 15’S ANGELICA ROBINSON JOINS US LIVE FROM SOUTH CALHOUN STREET. THE BUILDING IS CONDEMNED AND MANY OF THE ARTISTS AND MUSICIANS WHO UTILIZE THE SECOND FLOOR TO PRACTICE HAVE NOT BEEN ALLOWED INSIDE. BUT THEY SAY THE EQUIPMENT WAS DAMAGED BY SMOKE AND WATER – AND IT COULD COST TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO REPLACE. 1835 – A SECOND HOME FOR ARTISTS IN TOWN. C. RAY HARVEY “THE 1835 BUILDING HAS BEEN KIND OF A GODSEND FOR LOCAL MUSICIANS AND ARTISTS…” THE TOP FLOOR – A SPACE FOR THEM TO PRACTICE – AND ALSO STORE EQUIPMENT. BUT A FIRE EARLY MONDAY MORNING RIPPED THROUGH THE BUILDING – LEAVING MANY OF THEM TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO NEXT. C. HIS BAND RECENTLY RECORDED IN A DIFFERENT STUDIO – A LOT OF EQUIPMENT WASN’T THERE. BUT HE SAYS THE COST TO REPAIR OR REPLACE ALL OF THE EQUIPMENT COULD COST TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. AND THE BANDS NEED TO FIND A NEW PLACE TO PLAY. BUT JUST NEXT DOOR AT CS3 – THE OWNER DONNA KESSLER IS DOING EVERYTHING SHE CAN TO HELP. ORGANIZING A FUNDRAISER AND OFFERING UP SPACE FOR BANDS TO REHEARSE. DONNA KESSLER “SOUTH CALHOUN IS A VERY CLOSE TIGHT KNIT COMMUNITY. WE SPENT A LOT OF TIME TOGETHER WE DO A LOT OF EVENTS TOGETHER. THESE BANDS AND ARTISTS HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN FUNDRAISERS FOR OTHER PEOPLE SO I COULD JUST SEE THAT EVERYONE WAS GOING TO PULL TOGETHER TO HELP ALL OF THEM OUT AS WELL.” SHE’S WORKING WITH BEN LARSON – WHO WORKS AT THE RECORD STORE ACROSS THE STREET. LARSON SAYS IT SHOWS JUST HOW TIGHT KNIT THE ARTS COMMUNITY IS.
