TB alert issued for patrons of Fort Wayne nail salon

OFFICIALS AT THE ALLEN COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT SAY PEOPLE WHO WENT TO A FORT WAYNE NAIL SHOP EARLIER THIS YEAR MAY WANT TO GET TESTED FOR TUBERCULOSIS. THE DEPARTMENT RECENTLY LEARNED AN ACTIVE CASE OF T-B – CONNECTED TO CALI NAILS IN SOUTHGATE PLAZA. WANE 15’S ANGELICA ROBINSON HAS THE STORY. ANGELICA? ALLEN COUNTY HEALTH COMMISSIONER DR. DEB MCMAHON SAYS THE EXPOSURE IS LIMITED – AND THE RISK OF CONTRACTING T-B IS LOW. BUT THEY’VE ISSUED THIS WARNING OUT OF AN ABUNDANCE OF CAUTION. HEALTH OFFICIALS SAY ONLY PEOPLE WHO VISITED CALI NAILS, LOCATED ON EAST PETTIT, FROM JANUARY TO JULY OF THIS YEAR ARE AT RISK. IT’S UNCLEAR IF THE INFECTED PERSON WAS AN EMPLOYEE OR A CUSTOMER. BUT MCMAHON SAYS THE INFECTION CAN DEVELOP OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME – AND OFTEN TAKES A WHILE TO DIAGNOSE. T-B IS A BACTERIAL INFECTION THAT USUALLY ATTACKS THE LUNGS. IT SPREADS THROUGH THE AIR WHEN AN INFECTED PERSON COUGHS, TALKS OR SNEEZES. HOWEVER, MOST PEOPLE’S IMMUNE SYSTEMS WILL PREVENT THEM FOR DEVELOPING ACTIVE T-B. AT ONE TIME THE INFECTION WAS VERY COMMON. NOW THERE ARE ABOUT 10-20 CASES A YEAR IN ALLEN COUNTY, ACCORDING TO THE HEALTH COMMISSIONER. ((.IF YOU WERE IN THAT SHOP DURING THAT TIME AND YOU WANT TO GET TESTED THEN BY ALL MEANS GET TESTED. BUT I DON’T WANT PEOPLE TO WORRY ABOUT THIS, THE RISK IS REALLY VERY LOW. AGAIN THIS IS JUST TRYING TO BE TRANSPARENT AND IN AN ABUDANCE OF CAUTION. ..)) SYMPTOMS OF T-B INCLUDE COUGHING, CHEST PAIN, FATIGUE, CHILLS AND A FEVER. THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH IS OFFERING FREE T-B TESTING TOMORROW, NEXT WEDNESDAY, AND NEXT MONDAY FOR TESTING LOCATIONS AND HOURS, OR TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT, FIND THIS STORY ON WANE DOT COM.
