We are in a beautiful building, in a beautiful location in Cambridge. I don’t really think that there are two days that are the same, and I quite like that. Throughout the week there are two highlights for me. One is the team meeting every Monday morning where we talk about what’s happening what’s going to happen, any recent successes and so on. And the other one is the chatty coffee where I’m open to anyone to come in and chat about how to improve SyndicateRoom. In a startup you get to be a lot more hands-on with whatever’s going on and you get a lot more autonomy. SyndicateRoom really trusted me from a very early stage to control my own calendar, to work with the people I wanted to work with and really to get involved with the process. A lot of the people who work here currently started off in completely different roles and managed to create completely new roles for themselves, and the business has supported them. We want people who are willing to set about making that role their own. We have a very open and honest working environment that promotes discussion and creativity and problem-solving. If you don’t understand something, you don’t feel awkward asking people to explain things. You feel like you can approach anyone and they will take you seriously. For lunch there’s just so many options. This I could talk about for some time. The market is a five minute walk away. I go for a walk with a few of the people here. We come back to the office and sit in the communal area and eat some food and have a chat. The team meets up after work several times a week and they have board games, and go to the pub and cycling together. We celebrate all birthdays. Whenever it’s anyone else’s birthday, we’ll always have birthday cake. We’ve done amazing things like go-karting. It got super-competitive. I pretty much crashed into everyone. We might go ice skating, or bowling, or we just host a film night here and get some pizzas in. It’s still not like working for a big company. You know, if a big company wins an award they’re like “[mumble] good job”. When we win, we’re like “ring the bell!” [group] Cheers! I’ve been surprised by how everyone’s just really, really welcoming. You can feel comfortable with everyone straight away. The people I work with here genuinely are just the best. Everyone has a very entrepreneurial attitude so everyone really wants to execute good work every day. Everyone’s really proud of the work they’re doing. We’re scaling the business and, if things go well, will present new challenges to work on. There’s a lot of work to do, but it’s exciting. The more it grows, the more money it has, the more filled the biscuit drawer will be, right? I actually enjoy waking up at 7 o’clock and thinking about coming to work. I have a lot of friends who work in the city and in the financial sector I can honestly say out of all of them I’m probably one of the only people that truly loves their job.
